The mission of Web of Life is to give families in their childbearing year a well rounded education and ongoing postpartum support that is not limited to the constraints of time or money. Web of Life is creating a new model for childbirth education based on the model of many yoga classes in the Portland area. There are already many childbirth education classes available that are offered as an ongoing four to eight week series. The problem with this is that many cannot either afford the time or the cost. This means that families may not have access to information or community that will allow them to make informed choices during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
As an alternative, Web of Life offers the option to attend a three week series of classes or to simply drop into an individual class. The benefit of this is model is that families will not be adversely impacted by time constraints, the timing of their estimated due date, or their budget. Thus, families can pay for a punch card at a discount or simply pay per class to attend childbirth and postpartum workshops. Families will find that Web of Life’s childbirth education program is not biased toward home births or hospital births. Your instructor understands that it is the memory of YOUR birth that we are working to preserve and will always offer information that will help YOU make informed choices.
Each childbirth education class encompasses a variety of information including, but not limited to, a history of birth, nutrition, hormonal orchestration, basic birth anatomy, the stages of birth, labor and postpartum support, newborn care, postpartum planning, and breastfeeding basics. Rather than each class building on itself, each will be taught as a separate workshop. This means that a family can attend a class on Newborn Care before a class about Labor and Support and they won’t feel like they missed out on something important.
Ongoing postpartum support is also available to any family who is interested. They needn’t attend a childbirth education class or series in order to find support at Web of Life. Entire families (mom, dad/partner, and baby) are encouraged to meet at our location once a week. Families will also have the option to alternate at one another’s homes. Topics will be suggested each week, including going back to work, sleep, introducing solids, speech development, and more. This is a step beyond the already widely available “Mommy and Me” groups. Dads and partners are actively encouraged to participate because when families connect, children benefit.
It is the goal of Web of Life to help pregnant families become confident parents. By keeping the structure loose and the atmosphere open, families will feel welcome at any stage of their childbearing year. |
